Check out this very interesting 20 minute documentary, A Virus Called Fear, about the nature of the emotion of fear. In it the filmmaker pieces together a number of interviews with sociologists and biologists to identify the biological root of fear. However, the most interesting themes in this brief documentary are: 1 - how we learn to fear during our early lives and 2 - how that normally very useful emotion can grow within us, based on our surroundings and experiences, to the point that it actually does as much harm as good. For those of us that struggle with anxiety, the great takeaway from this documentary is that, just as we can foster the growth of our fears, so too can we work to put our fears in check.
