I came across this rather technical article recently about the potential for blueberries to aid in the treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Currently, SSRIs such as Paxil and Zoloft are the only FDA-approved treatments for PTSD. However, they have been shown to be only marginally effective. One of the theories for why SSRIs have limited effectiveness in treating PTSD is the fact that while they do increase levels of serotonin (a good thing), they also increase levels of norepinephrine (not such a good thing).
There is some good news out of a research group from the University of Louisiana however. They recently conducted an experiment with rats, which determined that blueberries increase serotonin without also increasing norepinephrine. Perhaps blueberries really are a super food!
